However, there may be times, as part of their job related activities, when personnel need to gain access to contaminated locations, where the atmosphere has the potential to be unsafe. For example, to further test the atmosphere of a confined space or where a life saving emergency response is required. Rescuers are no less important than those they are trying to rescue. The use of breathing apparatus will be vital to protect the rescuer whilst in the contaminated atmosphere. Breathing Apparatus can be complex equipment to operate. Proper training and practice is required to maintain currency. Australian Standard AS1715:2009 advises that workers who are expected to use Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), should be re-trained at least annually or more often depending on the specific circumstances.
