Winery Worker Temporarily AsphyxiatedRecently, a worker was temporarily asphyxiated when attempting to retrieve an item of plant from a wine storage tank. The incident occurred when a wine storage tank was being emptied. A worker opened the bottom tank door to inspect the wine level when the tank was near empty. As the worker opened the door, a circlip securing the door to the hinging mechanism dislodged, causing the door to fall into the tank. Another worker attempted to retrieve the door by leaning into the tank and in the process was overcome by the carbon dioxide escaping from the tank. SAFEWORK SA have produced a bulletin specfic to this incident. You can view the bulletin by clicking here http://www.safework.sa.gov.au/uploaded_files/hazalert100i.pdf It is important that all workers who have to enter confined spaces are properly trained and equipped and all possible steps are taken to minimise the need to enter. For more information on training or guidance on how to define a confined space area, risk assessment, procedure and rescue plan, contact us by clicking the contact link above. |
